CABBAGETOWN
The Gluzberg team has been active in managing property in Cabbagetown for many years, and that’s because this neighbourhood excites us. It is deep with Irish and Macedonian history, while offering its residents unique Victorian-style housing and a hip, young vibe, all in a prime location.
THE AREA
Once upon a time, Cabbagetown (so-called because of the working-class residents who grew cabbages and other vegetable in their front yards) was considered one of Toronto’s worst slums. But given the district’s convenient location and extraordinary collection of distinctive Victorian architecture, gentrification was only a matter of time. In the 1970s and 80s the area began a revitalization, and today Cabbagetown is one of the most coveted neighbourhoods in the city. Gluzberg property management is active in this popular Toronto area.
THE VIBE
Uber-urban, a mix of upscale and gritty. In many ways, Cabbagetown feels like a small town within the city. It’s largely gentrified but still a little rough around the edges. Organic grocers and dollar stores, upscale gastro-pubs and fast-food store-fronts line the main thoroughfare, Parliament Street. Heritage homes sit a stone’s throw from the family-friendly Riverdale Farm—a working farm in the centre of the city. There’s a genuine feeling of community spirit in Cabbagetown. Residents take pride in their ‘hood, and the Cabbagetown BIA organizes a number of popular annual events, including the Cabbagetown Festival, the Cabbagetown Bunny Hop and the Cabbagetown Art and Craft Sale. It’s the only neighbourhood in Toronto to have its own flag (featuring a cabbage, of course).
REAL ESTATE
Cabbagetown boasts a vast collection of thoughtfully restored heritage homes. According to the Cabbagetown Preservation Association, it’s the largest contained area of preserved Victorian houses in North America. These properties are protected, so you won’t see them torn down and replaced with monster homes. Recently, new townhomes and midrise condominiums have come to the neighbourhood, with more on the way. And there are a significant number of renters and high-rise rental apartments in the district. Given its nearly central location and its unique housing stock, Cabbagetown property values will continue to escalate.
